Benevolently Ominous
Left the house a 9:30. The skies are partly cloudy and there is a steady breeze blowing.
As I pass Doheny I can see that the ocean surface is pretty jumbled by this breeze.
Things look similar at the Strand parking lot. Despite the breeze, it still feels relatively warm as I head down the stairs.
I can tell that the current must be pushing from the south as I watch the wind blowing water in that direction.
There are a lot of clouds in the air and the mood seems to shift from cloudy to sunny and sunny to cloudy moment by moment.
There is a bit more surf today than the weekend but still nothing to write home about. The water temperature feels about the same as it has on the last couple swims.
Last night’s water temperature forecast was all doom and gloom. We are supposed to get some solid onshores tomorrow afternoon lasting overnight and into Thursday morning. According to the forecast, that will cause temperatures to plummet into the lower 60s and maybe upper 50s. I have learned to take these forecasts with a grain of salt. They are often incorrect and sometimes feel overly dramatic. That said, November is about the time they turn off the heater for the season here. For all I know this could be my last comfortable swim until April. We’ll just have to see.
As I swim south, I am definitely heading against the grain and its a pretty bumpy ride. It’s good.
I don’t see any fish today. The water visibility is quite cloudy.
I get to my southern turn around point and head north. Things definitely seem to settle down as I now head with the current.
The water just feels great and I enjoy the slightly cool sensation I feel running over my body.
I come across a boat that is floating in one particular spot and seems to be surrounded by Seagulls. I wonder what draws their attention.
I eventually turn around again and make my final south bound leg of the swim. The bump ratchets up again. However it seems I am making good forward progress and seem to get to my landing point pretty quickly.
I head up the stairs to the car. The clouds give the air an ominous look but the water was very benevolent.
