Brown Cloud at the Bottom
Alas, it’s Monday. Conditions were cloudy and 51 degrees outside when I got up at 4:30. It stayed cloudy all morning but looking at the cams on Surfline, the water looked super glassy. Just before I left the house at 9:30, I was beginning to feel a slight touch of sun poking through the cloud cover. However looking toward the coast, I wasn’t sure if I could see a fog bank. The cams still showed solid visibility so I left to get while the getting was good. Approaching the strand, it looked like more sunlight was poking through. I could hear the fog horn blowing from the parking lot but I could easily see the horizon in all directions so there was no risk of getting lost in the fog today.
The Canada beach chair is finally gone today. It had a good run here and hopefully found itself in the hands of a loving owner.
Definitely not much in the way of surf today. As I hit the water it feels even colder than the last few days but I could definitely feel several warm patches out past the small surf. Sometimes I’m not certain if these are warm spots (the term warm is used with great relativity) or if my body is just adjusting because I notice the warmth in my torso but the water against my face feels colder.
The entire Southern half of the swim has very little visibility and it looks as though there is a dark brown cloud hovering along the floor. I think (but not certain) this could be a tame algae bloom. When I get to the Northern half of the swim, this cloud is pretty much gone and overall visibility is pretty good. I see one Garibaldi.
By the time the swim is completed, the sun is shining pretty good and it feels great. I don’t bother toweling off and putting on a layer for the walk up the stairs. There are not many more things I can think of that feel better than warm sun on cold skin.
