Freed from the Grip of Big Bob
It’s one of those mornings where the meetings just don’t seem to want to end and I leave the house a little after 11:00 under a cloudless blue sky.
I get to the parking lot and there is some faint haze on the horizon but otherwise it is bright and sunny and warm. Looks like someone turned on the summer switch.
There is a good number of cars here and I’d say for good reason.
When I get to the beach it looks like the tide is on the higher side having just passed the day’s high at 11:00 of 4.6.
As I am walking on the sand out to my starting spot, a wave comes to shore and I see it’s white water heading for a guy who is obliviously soaking in the rays. It hits his feet and he comes to an almost immediate standing position.
Once I am aligned with my rock with the drill hole and that serves as my reference as a launching point, I notice that the hole, which was was higher than I am tall this Winter is now nearly buried in sand.
With the higher tide, the small-medium sized waves are breaking very close to shore so I don’t walk far before diving in and starting to swim. Man it sure feels good. The lifeguard station said 70 degrees for whatever that is worth.
Monday night’s water temperature forecast is calling for a drop in temperatures by tomorrow morning due to onshore winds this evening. However I think the forecast may have changed since that report because I just don’t see any significant wind called for in the next 24 hours. Besides, it would need to be a pretty significant drop to sour these conditions.
I’m heading south and I can feel the current pushing me along.
I’m just soaking in this water and the good vibes that are all around out here.
When I get to the south end of the beach, I look up and see a small flock of Pelicans flying south west aiming to go around the point.
I turn around and head north. As I now face the horizon, I see a few sail boats heading north - triangles floating just on the edge of my sight.
The current is now working against me but it’s not too strong. It is pushing me further out shore and I need to continually steer myself in the direction of the beach.
By the time I get to Big Bob, I am way west of the buoy and need to swim directly east to make contact with it. It looks like the paddle from Sunday and Monday has been freed from his grip.
I head south again and finish up. What a great swim and way to break up the day. I have a bit more hustle in my step today heading up the stairs because I have a bunch of work to do but man what I would give to just stay here.
