Hint of Memories
Late swim today on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. I left the house at about 1:30 and it was warm and sunny.
When I get to the parking lot, it’s pretty sparse, but the scenery on hand definitely warrants a crowd. The ocean surface is a bit textured by the light afternoon breeze.
It’s heading for a low tide and it’s already pretty low. The surf is down considerably since Sunday morning but there are still some waves to be had.
As I walk out into the surf, I manage to stub my toe on a rock and the language might have entered R rated territory but things are quickly ameliorated by the overall delightful conditions that surround me.
The water is still warm. It might be a touch cooler than Sunday but I’m calling 67-68. It’s nice. There may not be many more days like this left for 2022 so I will savor them while they remain.
Water visibility is generally terrible but there are a few isolated spots where I can see the floor - mostly on the southern end of the swim. About half way down there is a school of what I think is Corbina circling me.
When I get to the south end, there is a beautiful afternoon light hitting the rocks and cliffs that separate me from Dana Cove by the Ocean Institute.
I turn and head back north and I am looking into the sun shimmering on the water. I have music running through my mind from some piano I was playing last night.
There really is nothing not to like about this swim. I pause as I approach my northern turnaround point, and everything just feels so peaceful. Sometimes the Fall afternoons eclipse the wonder of the Summer afternoon here at the beach. The water is often warmer and the crowds are much smaller.
Something about this light that is magical. It brings back, not memories, but the hint of memories if that makes any sense. It’s like deja vu - a sense memory that you just can’t pin on any specific moment in time. And this one is good.
