It’s a Trap
Another late start today. I had some work that I wanted to get out of the way before my swim and I was out of here at about 1:30.
It’s sunny skies and high 60s outside. When I get to the beach parking lot there is a gentle onshore breeze and a little texture on the water. Looking north, there is some haze and clouds accumulating but I am still classifying conditions as pleasant.
Heading down the stairs, the water looks like it may be clearer today than it has been in a while.
I arrive on the sand and it is a medium tide. It’s recovering from a pretty deep 6.2 high a couple hours earlier. Whatever surf was left on Wednesday from Sunday’s swell is gone now. It’s pretty flat on the water today and no surfers out which is pretty rare.
I head out into the water and the temperature is nice - about the same as Wednesday.
It is indeed clearer today - much clearer. About half way down my initial southern leg of the swim I see what looks like some kind of container on the floor with a line leading to it. I look up and I see a small buoy. On closer inspection, it’s a lobster trap. It’s usually too cloudy to see them. I dive down to see if I can see anything inside and I can’t.
I keep swimming south and when I reach the cliffs I decide to go just a little further today until I am just shy of the rocks. I usually keep more distance but the surf is so gentle today that I don’t mind being so close.
I head northward and it feels like I am going against the current now and there is some chop beginning to develop. It’s still not too rough. Those northern clouds seem to be gaining dominance and it is growing more shadowy out here.
I see lots of fish today. Mostly Corbina but I get a good glimpse of a Calico Bass hovering about six fee below the surface.
I finally head in. All in all a great swim.
