Dana Strand Swim Report

Seaweed Flotilla

I left the house at 9 and it is completely overcast. I briefly consider waiting for the cloud coverage to burn off. The thing is it could be an hour or it could be 5 hours before that happens and I want to get the swim out of the way and get on with my work day. Like Sunday, I’m just gonna let go of the sunshine. It is pleasant enough out and the conditions are what they are.

I get to the beach and there is a little bit of a cool breeze, but very little. I’m wearing a t-shirt and feeling just a tad chilly but not enough to wish I was wearing extra. I get to the beach and surf looks about as down as it was Sunday. I wasn’t here yesterday but according to the surf report, yesterday had bigger surf. The water feels warm on my feet. Surfline updated to 68-69 today. Now we are really talking Summer. However the lifeguard station reports 64. Well we shall see.

I hop in the water and OMG…it is nice. For once, I’m veering closer to the surfline report even though one would think the local lifeguard station to be more reliable. I know I recently said that that the 65-67 degree water is just about perfect. I am going to revise that statement right now. THIS is perfect. I am definitely warmer in the water once I start swimming than I was out of the water.

The entire swim is so so nice. I just relax into it and allow the tension in my thoughts to loosen. The visibility is fair but again very pleasant. The water is a beautiful teal color and the kelp trees lean into the very light current. I let my hands brush against them as I pass. Everything is just this water and I feel like I could swim forever. I get to my final turn around point at the bathrooms just south of the Salt Creek lifeguard tower. There are several Jr. Lifeguard Easy-Up canopies congregated in that area. I wish I could push them all another half mile North to extend my swim. Of course nothing is stopping me from going further but I do have things I need to get done.

To add to the niceness of this swim, the clouds are burning off and there is significant patches of blue sky above. I begin my swim to shore and hit what feels like a seaweed flotilla. It is so thick, I swim out of its way because it feels like I could literally crawl over it. It warms the water underneath and around it.

After coming to shore I grab my stuff and enjoy the walk up the stairs in the sun.
