Sun

Sun! I leave the house a little before 10:30 with a perfectly blue sky.

When I get to the parking lot there is a pretty good onshore breeze blowing. I can tell today is going to be a rough ride on the water but I am excited to have the brighter light.

As I walk down the stairs, I feel the breeze cool on my front side and the sun feels quite toasty on my back side.

The lifeguard station at the bottom reports a water temperature of 64 (I’m calling 65) and it looks like we have had some sand taken over the past few days. The Jupiter rock is nearly fully exposed again.

Surf is still up today and even though the surf report gives a slightly smaller wave size today, I’m seeing bigger waves - still nothing super big or stressful.

The tide is highish. As I get into the water, the water recedes back to the ocean and then a wave breaks on the sand right in front of me getting me instantly wet. I start swimming out past the surf. The previous set of waves just finished so there is nothing to dive under on the way out.

Wow it is on the rougher side but the water feels nice.

As I approach the southern end of the swim, I can see waves breaking much further out than usual about parallel to where I am swimming. I have some time before I get to that area but as I pause the waves look pretty big as they roll past me. I’m not in the impact zone but I feel close and decide to head due west to gain more distance between me and the breaking waves.

I don’t spend much time here before continuing my swim northward. As I head towards Salt Creek, I am now swimming against the current. This is turning out to be a pretty good workout. I am not dilly dallying and it takes me 10 minutes longer than usual to get to the northern end which is a third of the typical time it takes.

Still no sign of the Green Monster. I’m pretty far from shore now and try to head inland as I make my way back to finish the swim. Once I get lined up with the spot where I plan to swim to shore, a good sized set passes through. I head directly east and don’t have a single wave crash on or over me.

It’s a pretty great day to be here and I savor the walk back up the stairs to my car.
